More American Graffiti (1979)
I really love AMERICAN GRAFFITI (1973); it's one of my favorite films ever. So I always had to have this unworthy sequel along, which is probably one of the most disappointing followups to a great film that I can think of. Maybe I'm crazy for owning this, but I get a kick out of seeing the characters from the original again, especially Charles Martin Smith as "Terry the Toad". I think his Vitenam scenes are the best thing about the film, although all the other "vignettes" are terribly dull. Still some good 60s tunes, though.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I was amazed with Universal's new DVD of this film. It looks absolutely gorgeous, and if there was ever a good case made for OAR, it would be this film. I think this is the first time I've ever seen it the proper way, widescreen in 2.35:1, with many, many bizarre angles and separations and "psychedlic" gimmicks. It probably doesn't make it a good film, but it's at least something to help keep you at least semi-interested in the goings-on. |

This is perhaps the worst sequel to a great film ever made. AG is one of my favorite films of all time but this sequel is an insult. I usually collect ALL films in a series but I won't be buying this. Nothing in it works IMO.
It's good to see it get a good DVD release however. |

I liked the sequences of Candy Clark in late 1960s San Francisco....but the film pales in comparison to the original which I think is a modern classic.

I saw More American Graffiti on cable years ago and the only thing I can remember about it is Cindy Williams standing up on a bus singing "Baby Love" as some sort of protest. Oooh, how 60's

This film, while not that great, is not the worst sequel to a great film. That honor falls to Jack Nicholson's sequel to Chinatown called The Two Jakes, which was so bad I walked out of the theater midway through. A later cable viewing didn't help, either.

i've always had a good opinion of this movie but i haven't seen it in a loooong time.
i got the disc and will probably watch it in the next few days. one thing about it i like is the 'trippy' way they structure time, flipping back and forth. i may find the film to be a big mis-fire now, with age and wisdom, but at least it will still be an interesting misfire. i've never been a big fan of the original . i've wanted to like it, but much of it seems cliched, limp, and obvious to me. i would probably own the first season of Happy Days before i would AG. jmo, of course. |
