Re: Not Of This EArth & The Terror Within/Dead Space DVD Artwork!

Original artwork on packaging is definitely a big plus. Personally its not a factor when I'm trying to decide whether or not I'll make a blind purchase. Websites like the Internet Movie Database are a good place to find out about a movie, although I will buy almost anything horror-related if it was made during the "golden age". In some cases the alternate artwork on the reverse side of those Shout Blu-rays is even better than the original - I switched to the "Mindwarp" sleeve on my GOT disc.

I decided to use the alternate artwork in my Death Race 2000 blu-ray. It just looks a lot cooler to me.

Holy crap!!!!! I just noticed this thread. Another double threat release day. I didn't expect to see Terror Within so soon in the line up. Another movie where old George Kennedy goes to fight the monster and loses. I think I just need to send Shout! my bank card and pass code.....

Honestly, I don't really care about NOT OF THIS EARTH TV version. It sounds like a neat extra but it's not really a dealbreaker. And Jim should get on the project everybody is waiting for: a RETURN OF SWAMP THING SE.

Well...I would want it.

Re: Not Of This EArth & The Terror Within/Dead Space DVD Artwork!

I've noticed The Evil / Twice Dead is $17.99 ($19.93 list) and I pre-orded Death Sport / Battle Truck for $9.49 ($14.98 list). Is there a difference in popularity and/or quality with these titles?

Some of these flicks may require a little more digging for materials or prints and may cost more to remaster. I was more worried about the late-scheduled titles not coming out because of poor sales but Cliff has reassured us that everything that's on the slate will be released regardless of sales numbers - I'll gladly pay whatever Shout asks for for a copy of The Evil.

Just curious, but the links in your posts in threads like these are the A.V. Maniacs affiliate links, right?

Re: Not Of This EArth & The Terror Within/Dead Space DVD Artwork!

I saw DEAD SPACE the night before last, and, yes, it pales in comparison to the original, FORBIDDEN WORLD. This could have been a really good remake, but I think what was mainly working against it was the time frame it was made in. I don't think you could have made FORBIDDEN WORLD, the way it was done in '81, in the 90s. I seem to recall horror, and science fiction horror, being almost non-existant, or if it was around, being really, really tame. I also seem to recall the 90s being just a bad decade for horror in general, which is why DEAD SPACE looks and feels so antiseptic, so homogenized.

Compared to the "wetness" of FORBIDDEN WORLD, DEAD SPACE is "dry." And it shows mostly in the monster and the gore effects. Not once during FORBIDDEN WORLD do you feel you're looking at a cheap effect, you do in the remake. The camera sits too long on the monster at the end, and the monster design itself is very conventional, very easily identifiable. The mutant in the original struck me like some kind of Lovecraftian hippo, where as the thing in the remake reminded me of something prehistoric, with praying mantis-like arms. Which I guess is no stranger, but it was just so unimpressive.

Now, the weird thing here is, even though it sounds like I hated the flick, I actually LIKED it! It's got a nice 80s high tech look to it, the mood lighting is the same way, too, and I have always been a fan of Marc Singer, so when I started watching it, it reminded me of my teenage age years, which, I think, went a long way in making me like it this time around.

Obviously, FORBIDDEN WORLD is the better of the two, but, I found this one rather watchable, surprisingly enough, and if I can wrangle the dough together this Fall, I MIGHT get it.
