Sony TOHO DVD set for 2009!!

From an interview posted at: http://www.hkfilmnews.blogspot.com/2...exclusive.html

1. So what is the word on releases of dual US/Japanese versions of Mothra, H-Man, and the Battle in Outer Space? The grey market has been filled with wide and subbed copies of the Japanese versions, but the English language version has only appeared on badly duped copies from 16MM, making them a desired inclusion.

The set is penciled in for ’09. It will contain those three plus REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 3, which somehow got overlooked for DVD. The intent is to have the uncut versions with Japanese tracks as well as the English dubs. MOTHRA and BIOS are done; H-MAN is proving to be a bit trickier, but it should be completed in time.

Looks like a winner. Sony's Toho titles look quite a bit better to me than Media Blasters' and Classic Media's, with deeper blacks, brighter colors and a clearer picture. Here's hoping Sony maintains the excellent QC on these upcoming releases.

As long as they don't butcher the picture quality like they did on their Godzilla: Tokyo SOS DVD. I also like the fact that Classic Media and Media Blasters keep the original Japanese credits, instead of using translated, International ones (that also makes sure we don't get anything like the hideous gray box over that plays over the title of GMK).

Regardless of those quibbles, I'm ecstatic about these releases.

I'd bet on sometime around August as that's when all the genre titles start rolling out for the Halloween push. I think all of the other Icons of Horror have come out around then, too.

Be very curious to see what titles are included in this.

Re: Sony TOHO DVD set for 2009!!

The work on all of them has been done, and the set will contain the separate Japanese and US versions of THE H-MAN and MOTHRA. BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE will be the Japanese version with English and Japanese audio -- I lobbied Mike S. at Sony to branch the Japanese and US opening credits, so the viewer can select either version. Hopefully, he made it happen.

Still waiting to hear word on Special Features, if any...

Re: Sony TOHO DVD set for 2009!!

Besides the main titles, I am pretty happy that Rebirth of Mothra 3 is coming out as well. I never thought it would make it out here, and everytime I came across my US disc of the first two, it would gnaw the hell out of my OCD. Glad I don't have to deal with that anymore.

Dusty,
MOTHRA 3 will not be included in this set; it has been pulled for a later release.

Re: Sony TOHO DVD set for 2009!!

August,

Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra really are terrific films. Very much a product of their times. It is wild to consider that amidst the wonderful monster mayhem and wholesale destruction of such detailed mock up cities, you get these strong textures running through them. Godzilla with the responsibility and shame of creating atomic power and weapons. Rodan with the ending of a species and the exploitation of the eco system that spawned them. The intensity of some of the performances was truly an anomoly for a giant monster movie. The intense scientist with the patch over his eye with the death ray gun in Godzilla was almost spookier to a kid than Gojira himself then!

It's been so long since I've seen Mothra. I don't think I've ever seen it as an adult.

Please give us a heads up on the exact release date and the extras as you hear. Nice write up on your site, too.

Steve

Re: Sony TOHO DVD set for 2009!!

The packaging SUCKS!

The art work is pretty ugly. Wish it was classy like the Classic Media releases. All 3 discs sit on top of each other on a single hub. I tried putting 2 discs in sleeves and slipping them in the case, but this case isn't co-operating. The dvds seem cheap, maybe it's because they are transparent.

Watching Mothra with the commentary and everything seems swell. I'm happy to finally have these.
