Single Best Example Of 60's Psychedelia In Music

If you had to pick just one song that encapsulates the psychedelic 60's era, what would it be? One song, that when you listen to it not only reminds you of the era but reeks with the feel of it as well?

It's a tough one for sure, especially to pick just one example. I listen to a lot of 60's Grateful Dead and that is heavy psych stuff from the time but the one tune that used to signify that time for me was "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" by Status Quo. That song is just about everything that personifies the era. Now, I think the one song that really does it is the long version of "Crimson And Clover" by Tommy James And The Shondells. Not the short radio cut, but the long version. It's a freakin' 5:32 psychedelic trip!

Any other nominees?

"Tomorrow Never Knows" - The Beatles

Grateful Dead were just meandering jam/country bullshit after their first two albums.

Cream - SWLABR

An unusual choice, as one would be more likely to choose a more famous one like "White Room" or "Sunshine of Your Love," but every time I listen to this one I think "only in the 60s."

"San Francisco" by Scott McKenzie. Peace, love and flowers in your hair by a one hit wonder. Or "In A Gadda Da Vida" by Iron Butterfly.

And welcome back John!

Hmmm, more Floyd. I must admit to actually considering "Arnold Layne" for this thread.

Chad, have you ever heard the long version of "Crimson And Clover"?

Well to be honest Bill, I almost went with "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" :)

I don't know if I've ever heard the long version but I do like Tommy James, "Dragging The Line" is a classic pop song.

If you get the chance, sign on Soulseek. I've got something I want you to hear.

"Pictures Of Matchstick Men" is a tough one not to choose. :) If it's ok, let's do Soulseek tomorrow night. I have family in from Arizona and I gotta go hang with them for a few before turning in. Speaking of Soulseek, look for "Crimson" if you have time. The long version runs about 5 and a half minutes. :)

The tune stuck in my head is the (no doubt) untitled instrumental tune that was playing at every single pot smoking hippie party that Reed and Malloy had to bust in ADAM-12.

I Am The Walrus by The Beatles is a trippy and annoying(in my opinion song). They sure sounded stoned off their asses with that one. The lyrics make no sense and it's just bizzare...

"I Am the Walrus,I Am the Eggman..koo kooo koo ka chooooo Wooooooo" etc.

Sister Ray by the Velvet Underground is a screeching 17 minute orgy of noise, which I can just picture them jamming all stoned and playing just for the hell of it.

Good choices here. I gotta give 'Psychotic Reaction" a nod ( not sure who sings it)

But I have to show Texas pride here and go with THE 13th Floor ELEVATORS ( possibly the FIRST psychedelic band!) "Reverberation"

As much of a Floyd fan as I am, the first thing that popped into my head was White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. Good nods to everything else here...and the Count Five are awesome.

Not my favorite band or anything but I think "Rock Me Baby" by Steppenwolf is a perfect example of psychadelia, the sound and especially the lyrics. Another suitable song would be "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane.

They sure were and it's a fine, fine song.

Floyd puts me to sleep. So do the Beatles.

I'm thinking right now maybe Sympathy For The Devil, but I'm not sure why.

Definitely "If 6 Was 9" by Hendrix.

"Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" by those British dudes was pretty tripped out.

Some excellent choices! Another one that reminds me of the era is "Incense and Peppermints" by the Strawberry Alarm Clock.

I like alot of those Strawberry Alarm Clock tunes. My fave
is probably Theme From Psych Out.

I never knew there was a 5 minute version of Crimson & Clover!

So do the extra minutes have more lyrics or just longer music solos?

..even the Joan Jett cover is of the 2 minute version and runs that length.

What would be the best Tommy James album to get? Any definitive releases that cover most of what he's done?

I also saw a video on VH1 Classic by some sixties British(I assume) band singing a song that was defnitely about getting high.

I forgot the name, but it had "Park" in the title...and the lyrics went something like this..

"What will we do there?"
"WE'LL GET HIGHHHHHHHH!"
"What will we see there?"
"WE'LL TOUCH THE SKYYYYY"
then goes into a chorus of "it's all soo beautiful.."

Ichichoo Park I think was the name, now that I think about it,however you spell it.

Finding the long version of "Crimson And Clover" is a bit tricky. For example, two great CD's that cover the best of what the band has done are "Essentials" and "Anthology". However, both contain the short cut of the song I believe. The Rhino release of "Crimson & Clover/Cellophane Symphony" contains not only the 5 and a half minute version but also a 1:03 reprise and is a great overview of the bands work but does not contain "Draggin' The Line" which sucks.

Re: Single Best Example Of 60's Psychedelia In Music

BTW, if you have Real Rhapsody, they just added a Rhino release for Tommy James And The Shondells called "Rhino Hi-Five". It contains 5 songs including the long version of "Crimson".

The long version contains longer solo's. Lot's of psychedelic guitar work, heavy on reverb and the wah-wah pedal.
