The Film

The band who call themselves Manowar are known as the true kings of metal. Sure, it may be a self proclaimed moniker, but it's a good one. Let's role with it. The current line up of vocalist Eric Adams, bassist Joey DeMaio, guitar player Karl Logan and drummer Scott Columbus are featured on this new two disc set previously only available in PAL format and now released as a region 0 NTSC package.

So what evil lurks within this pair of silver discs? Plenty! There's plenty of evil here. Just take a look at that cover art by Ken Kelly for a glimpse. See that fire breathing demon holding a guitar and surrounded by naked ladies? That image represents just how metal Manowar are. How does one get to be as metal as Manowar? I know you all want to know. I can hear you all asking aloud at the same time. Well, it's certainly not easy, but it is possible. Just follow the bands lifestyle of leather, bikes, ladies, and rock and roll.

The are two main features, one on each disc. The first feature is Hell On Earth III and it takes up the majority of the first disc. Essentially, this piece captures the band on their 2002 World Tour as they play all across South America and Europe. Different songs are played in different locations, interspersed with some extremely metal footage of the band riding around on their motorcycles and making time with rock sluts. That's what they do. That's their lifestyle. And if you want to be a true brother of metal, or sister of metal for that matter, you'll follow their example and make it your lifestyle too. Why not wear ass-less leather chaps on stage while you play your bass guitar with the fury of a thousand stampeding horseman as they gallop across the plains on their way to victory? Can you think of a reason? I can't! Hell On Earth III is over ninety minutes of metal, and if you're a pussy, it'll probably be more than you can handle.

But if you're not a pussy, check out disc two! Cause on that second disc you're going to find a complete Manowar concert from their stop in Cologne, Germany where they played at the Ringfest in 2002. They blaze through nine of their best and of course, they open with their song Manowar, which is about, well, it's about themselves and how metal they are. And if you don't like it, that's too fucking bad because Manowar don't care what you think. They want to bang chicks and drink mead and play true metal music for true metal fans.

Something to keep in mind is that when losers say it's over with, you know that it's a lie. Because the Gods made heavy metal, and it's never gonna die. And if you don't believe me, just put these two discs in your DVD player, crank up your receiver as loud as it will go, and blow your speakers!

It's all here. Everything the true metal fan could ever ask for. Girls. Metal. Fans. Metal. Sweat. Metal. Leather. Metal. Harleys. Metal. All that good stuff. It's here and it's here for you to enjoy over and over again. Not only is there footage of Joey DeMaio picking up a girl by her crotch, there's also footage of fans making the sign of the hammer, Manowar fans who have tattooed themselves with the bands logo, and all sorts of cool stuff like that. But lest the music become overshadowed by the lifestyle, let me remind you that there are over twenty complete songs played in their entirety and that Manowar doesn't just play, they kill. They hail, and they kill. And you will want to hail and kill along with them in your living room with this double disc set that sets the standards in heavy metal DVD production!

Video 4/5

The two main features were shot with multiple cameras and encompass over sixty camera angels to get the job done. Video quality on these two features is pretty solid. Colors look good, blacks remain stable, and there is only mild evidence of compression in a few scenes. Everything here looks pretty good and there's really not much to complain about.

Some of the vintage footage isn't in quite as good a shape as the newer material. The old promotional videos are a little soft looking and look to have been taken from tape but the newer ones look great and once again leave us with little to complain about. Even when the video is less than perfect, what's on screen more than makes up for it! It's so metal that I'm surprised my fucking TV didn't melt when I watched it. Holy shit!

Audio 5/5

Two audio tracks with enough high energy contained within to kick you sorry ass back to Valhalla are on this set. There's a plain vanilla Dolby Digital 2.0 track for those of you losers without kicking surround systems and for the true brothers of metal amongst you, with 5.1 capability, there is a surround track which makes it sound like a heard of Viking brethren have stormed into your living room and started rocking! Your subwoofer will be left begging for more like a young girl in her prime as it's ravaged by Joey DeMaio and his bass, while Scott Columbus plays his drums like the Hammer of Thor keeping the beat pounding along. When Karl Logan's guitar solos kick in, you'll soon realize that all real men play on ten, and Eric Adams' piercing and powerful vocals come right at you like a bat out of Hell.

Extras 5/5
Hidden among the Earth shaking animated menus which feature the Manowar logo flying at you in an icy shade of blue, are a fine assortment of some of the heaviest extra features you're not likely to find anywhere else!

On disc one are the following bonus clips - Black Wind Fire And Steel, Herz Aus Stahl, March For Revenge, Wheels Of Fire, Alexander The Great, France, Moments In Time, Friends, Moments Of Truth, Nessun Dorma - The Story, and Wildlife. All this material is either live footage or 'on the road' footage that looks like it was shot around the same time as the Hell On Earth III feature so if you enjoyed that piece, and if you're a true metal warrior then you did, then you're sure to enjoy more material in the same vein.

The second disc is where the real meat of the extra features can be found. The video collection contains all of Manowar's promotional videos from day one. These are the videos that were too metal for MTV to play! But here they are - Gloves Of Metal, Blow Your Speakers, Metal Warriors (Live), Return Of The Warlord, Courage (Live), Warriors Of The World United, I Believe, Gloves Of Metal (Special Edition), and the short film, Secrets Of Steel. That last one should be required viewing for all metal fans as Manowar lays down the law by preaching their gospel of rock and roll. They explain in clear detail their philosophy of playing live, of recording, and of banging rock chicks. Orson Welles fans will be amused to see pictures of him recording with Manowar in this montage.

But that's not all, oh no. In addition to that there is an all new documentary that follows the making of the Ringfest concert, a clip called The Warrior's Prayer that should serve as inspiration to us all, and Making Of clips for Gloves Of Metal, Gloves Of Metal (Special Edition), Blow Your Speakers, Return Of The Warlord, and I Believe.

There is also a special short film entitled Fire, Ice And Gasoline which takes an in-depth look at the making of the Warriors Of The World United video.

If that weren't enough, there is also a nice collectible booklet included inside of the DVD's digipak case, which in and of itself is quite the work of art.

Overall 5/5
If you like metal, you're my friend. And if you like metal, you'll be a loser if you do not add this fine compilation from the true kings of metal, the metal warriors themselves, Manowar, to your DVD library. The heaviest band in the world also puts out the best DVDs, so don't be a loser, go get this DVD now! Head on over to the Kingdom of Steel and buy it!
