The Film
God bless Japan for giving us Sonny Chiba, Kinji Fukasaku, Meiko Kaji, Pinky Violence, Roman Porno, Gimme Gimme Octopus and The Iron Chef. And God bless Japan again for giving us Killer Pussy, known in more politically correct circles than this one as Sexual Parasite.

This trashy little gem begins when a group of jungle explorers prowling the outer reaches of Botswana discover a long lost tribe. One thing leads to another and before you know it, one of the female explorers becomes infected with an unusual parasite.

Fast forward a few years into the future and a gang of friends are our for a drive. Their car breaks down and in need of a place to stay for the night they bunk down in a remote abandoned building. Deciding to make the best of a bad situation, the group decides that rather than dwell on their misfortune, they should party the night away. A few drinks, a C player, and some sex all make for a fun night but what this folks don't realize is that this building houses the parasite that the female explorer from the opening scene unwittingly brought back with her. One of the girls finds the frozen body of said explorer on her way to the bath, and accidentally wakes her up. Of course, once this happens, the sexual parasite is raring to get back to doing what it does best and every horny man and woman in the building (which entails pretty much everyone there) is in some serious danger.

Taking a page from Peter Jackson's early films and borrowing from Frank Hennenlotter's output, Killer Pussy is a pretty nifty exploitation film. It's crass, it's stupid, it's bloody and it's choke full of gratuitous nudity. In a refreshingly unapologetic attempt to recapture an eighties era look and feel, the film relies primarily on latex and rubber effects rather than computer generated ones, and the monster easily reminds us of the creatures in The Deadly Spawn, but with a vaginal twist!

Interestingly enough, in the bath scene the female character gets down to Ennio Morricone's Deep Down from Danger Diabolik! - the credits attribute the song to 'Los Diabolicas.' The film also pilfers the theme from H.G. Lewis' She-Devil's On Wheels, and credit is given to The Maneaters. Someone listed as Mariachi Mezcal is given credit for a familiar sounding song titled Salvame. One has to wonder if the musician known only as Z.O.Z.O. intentionally messed with the credits here or if something got lost in the translation somehow.

While the film was obviously made fast and cheap, at sixty minutes in length it's ridiculously fast paced and the last half of the picture is pretty much a non-stop barrage of sex and violence. The actresses are frequently naked for no other reason than that they look nice without any clothes on and director Takao Nakano has no qualms whatsoever about covering his cast in blood and guts, naked or not.

If you don't take Killer Pussy too seriously (and honestly, you're probably not supposed to) this shot on video quicky is a lot of fun. Tongue is placed firmly in cheek throughout and those who like their trashy splatter films with a healthy dose of cute naked Japanese ladies should find a whole lot to like about this off kilter Asian oddity. It's not a good movie by any stretch but it's got enough blood and tits in it to work on that level.

Video 3.5/5

The 1.33.1/4x3 fullframe transfer on this disc presents the film in its original aspect ratio. The movie was shot on digital video and there's a little bit of softness here and there but aside from that the picture is pretty good even if it isn't properly flagged for progressive scan playback. Colors are nice and bright without looking to saturated and there aren't any serious problems with mpeg compression artifacts, edge enhancement or print damage.

Audio 3.5/5

The Japanese language Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track on Discotek's DVD is solid all around. There isn't a ton of channel separation but the dialogue is always clear and there aren't any problems with hiss or distortion. The levels are fine and the removable English subtitles are easy to read.

Extras 0.5/5

Discotek supplies a basic menu with chapter selection and a pair of trailers for unrelated properties as the only supplements on the disc.

Overall 3.5/5
Gleefully crass and refreshingly immature, Killer Pussy is a pretty rad little trash film. It's low budget is apparent in pretty much every aspect, but in a strange way it works in the film's favor. Discotek's DVD is light on extras but the movie is a blast.
